Tuesday Tunes: March 12, 2013

Hi friends! Today marks our inaugural "Tuesday Tunes" post-where we give a shout-out to those songs which are Earwigging/Earworming us out for the week. Highbrow, lowbrow, indie, mainstream: we're equal opportunity here at "Half and Half".

See the full list under the cut!

5) "Kiss You"-One Direction

Say what you will about the questionable tattoo choices of these British moppets, or the alleged subtle misogyny of some of their ballads, they make some damn catchy music. As children of the 90s, and fans of NKOTB, BSB and NSYNC, we appreciate 1D's bubble-gum, sexually androgynous and harmless sound. And we haven't investigated too closely, but pretty sure the "half your age plus 7 years" rule applies to us here. Barely. Just so you know we aren't TOO creepy.

We appreciate how Louis and Niall = the also rans of the group (see also Kevin and Howie from BSB; Joey and Lance from NSYNC;and everyone but Nick Lachey from 98 Degrees). Louis and Niall even have to ride in their own vehicle (at 0:15)!

We also came up with the One Direction Homoerotic Drinking Game: One shot for every time they playfully touch one another. Black out = guaranteed!

4)  "Feel This Moment"-Pitbull featuring Christina Aguilera

We want to hate Pitbull, we really do."Mr. Worldwide"? PLEASE.  And yet, his songs just GET IN YOUR BRAIN. Like Flo Rida, Pitbull manages to sample or find talent that far outstrip his own abilities which makes his songs not only tolerable, but enjoyable. (... Maybe that IS his talent. We just blew our own minds.) Also, Christina Aguilera sounds absolutely great. This song would have been better as a pure electro-house song, with just Christina and the DJ-- MRS. WORLDWIDE, thank you very much.

3)  "Catch My Breath", Kelly Clarkson

American Idol. "From Justin to Kelly". Engaged to some relative of Reba McEntire. So many reasons to hate, and yet we only have love for Ms. Clarkson. She can sing, and she writes empowering, anthemic songs, which again just GET IN YOUR HEAD. Plus, KC seems like a generally decent person. We also respect her for standing up for herself and think she looks absolutely flawless in this video.

2) "Carried Away", Passion Pit

Pure sweet synth-pop. Also an example of how perfectly a video and song can complement each other. We're happy to see the gorgeous Sophia Bush getting some work after "One Tree Hill". Seriously, in the last few seasons, she was the only part of that hot-mess-of-a-show worth watching.

1) "Fixed", Stars

We can't believe this song came out almost three years ago. Latte's been hearing it on the radio a lot lately and still just loves it. Beautiful, bittersweet ecstasy. Off Stars' phenomenal album "The Five Ghosts", which was overshadowed in 2010 by Arcade Fire's massive release "The Suburbs".
