See this week's top 5 under the cut!
5) fun, "Carry On"
Based on the lyrics of some of their songs, it appears that fun isn't really having all that much, well, fun. ("What do I stand for, what do I stand for, most nights I don't know").
While they can sound a little maudlin, lead singer Nate Ruess has some serious pipes. While he really got to showcase them on fun's massive hit "Some Nights", we think they're put to even better use here. We also buy the video's Bright Lights, Big City vibe: being in your twenties, lost at the end of the night, and eventually finding yourself.
4) Tegan and Sara, "Closer"
We've been fans of Canadian indie darlings Tegan and Sara since they first emerged in the early naughts. We think their 2007 release "The Con" was sorely overlooked commercially, despite receiving rave reviews.
The twin sisters said they set out to make their most accessible and "poppiest" album yet with their latest release "Heartthrob". Mission accomplished, girls. The album's first single, "Closer", has been on the airwaves for what seems like forever and we still love it. The yearning contained in the simple lyrics, "All I want to get is/A little bit closer"-we've all been there.
Like "Closer", "Don't You Worry Child" has been burning up the airwaves for several months but we still cannot get it OUT OF OUR BRAINS. And that's a good thing, since we won't be expecting new music from SHM in the foreseeable future: the DJ supergroup is dismantling after playing the Ultra Music Festival and a San Fran show later this month. Which is extra sad, since we hear they put on the best live shows.
2) Dragonette, "Run, Run, Run"
Dragonette is not our favorite band, but they make consistently good music. They were even featured in Martin Solveig's huge smash "Hello", which has one of the best music videos of all time. Cameos by Bob Sinclair and Novak Djokovic? We're game (pun intended). Their latest single, "Run, Run Run" is a smooth, solid song which reminds us of another band that made the list today, Tegan and Sara. High praise, indeed.
1) The Lumineers, "Stubborn Love"
We don't think it's humanly possible for you to be living in Canada or the United States and not have heard The Lumineers' breakout song "Ho Hey" in 2012. It's a great song on its own, and being featured in the trailer for "Silver Linings Playbook" during that film's interminable Oscar campagin sure didn't hurt its exposure.
We think their latest single, "Stubborn Love", is even better, with its bittersweet yet hopeful melody and soaring lyrics. Makes you want to sing along at the top of your lungs, and isn't that the ultimate sign of a great song?
